Standard Fire Tests on GFRP Reinforced Concrete Slabs with Different Reinforcement Detailing

Naeim Roshan, Ph.D. Student Carleton University

    Wednesday, June 17, 2026

    1:00 pm-2:00 pm ET

Free for members and students. $10 for non-members

This presentation will discuss a comprehensive experimental study involving five full-scale Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) reinforced concrete (RC) slabs fabricated at Carleton University and tested at the National Research Council Canada (NRC) fire laboratories in Ottawa under the CAN/ULC-S101 standard fire test (equivalent to ASTM E119).

The research examined the fire resistance performance of GFRP-RC one-way slabs subjected to full-scale furnace testing under predetermined loading conditions for up to 210 minutes. Remarkably, none of the slabs failed under the standard criteria during the prescribed testing period. Following the standard exposure duration, loads were increased to evaluate ultimate fire-resisting capacity, producing valuable insight into slab behaviour, load-carrying performance, and failure mechanisms under elevated fire conditions.

This session will provide attendees with a rare opportunity to explore cutting-edge fire testing research and the evolving understanding of GFRP reinforced concrete performance in fire scenarios.

We look forward to seeing members of the fire protection engineering and code consulting community for what promises to be an engaging and highly technical discussion.

    Naeim Roshan

Naeim Roshan is a researcher majoring in structural fire safety design, concrete technology, corrosion of reinforced concrete structures and the application of machine learning techniques. He is a PhD student at the Department of Fire Safety Engineering at Carleton University. Naeim got his master’s degree in structural engineering from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. As a part of his studies, he focused on the environmental impact of novel green concrete mixes incorporating SCMs and recycled fibers. Currently, at Carleton University, Naeim is investigating the fire behavior of GFRP-RC slabs with actual construction detailing.
