OTTAWA FIRE SERVICE BARNSDALE SITE TOUR

Presenter: Geoff Randall

Space is limited to 35 participants. The fee for lunch is $15 (optional). Registration is now open to everyone. If you order lunch please fill out the order form in the confirmation email.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Geoff is a 15 yr veteran of Ottawa Fire Services with a background in hi-tech and a degree in Engineering Physics from Queen’s University. In 2014 he joined a group in successfully applying for a federal grant from the Canadian Safety and Security Program spearheaded by Peter McBride, then Division Chief of Safety & Innovation. This grant led to the From Knowledge to Practice project which aimed to develop a fire dynamics curriculum for Canadian firefighters. This curriculum is now delivered, not only in Ottawa, but throughout Ontario by the Ontario Fire College, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, and in other jurisdictions across Canada.

Geoff received his Master’s in Fire Safety Engineering from the University of Waterloo under Beth Weckman in 2020 on work characterizing live fire training props used in Ottawa and based on those around the world. Geoff continues to train Ottawa recruits and casual firefighters alongside a dedicated cadre of live fire para trainers.

AGENDA

This technical session will start at noon with an optional lunch from Firehouse Subs (meal request form is in registration confirmation email). A background of the project, the training site, the ongoing curriculum delivery, and the characterization of the live fire prop will be presented during lunch. Following lunch, there will be a quick tour of the site highlighting the work done to enable a successful learning environment. There will be a series of small prop demonstrations followed by a full-scale burn starting around 2:00 pm. Attendees will be able to observe the start of this training scenario and then will leave the site so as not be exposed to smoke as the fire conditions intensify.
