The SFPE-NCR Chapter is pleased to welcome Julia Dalphy and Vicki Komisar from Fire and Life Safety Team at Codes Canada to present on new fire-related requirements introduced in the 2020 National Building Code of Canada and National Fire Code of Canada. Because this is such a large and important topic, this event will be hosted in two parts. Please register for each individual event that you would like to attend. JULIA DALPHY
Julia Dalphy is a Technical Advisor and Member of the Fire and Life Safety Team at Codes Canada, Construction Research Centre of the National Research Council of Canada. In this role, she provides guidance to the Standing Committees, Task Groups, and Working Groups that develop technical updates for the National Model Codes.
Julia previously worked as a Structural Engineer at a building supply company, largely focused on pre-engineered components (including roof trusses and floor systems) for wood-framed construction projects across Ontario. She developed expertise through her six years of designing, analyzing, engineering, and repairing building elements for tract homes, custom homes, and light commercial projects. To this day, she remains focused on safeguarding the public.
Julia is based in her hometown of Ottawa, and is designated as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) through Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). She holds a B. Eng. in Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering (specializing in Structural Engineering, Minoring in Business), as well as a College Certificate in Computer Aided Design and Drafting. Julia continues to give back to Carleton University’s engineering community as an active alumni member through various volunteer initiatives.
VICKI KOMISAR
Dr. Vicki Komisar is a Technical Advisor and Member of the Fire and Life Safety Team at Codes Canada, Construction Research Centre of the National Research Council of Canada. In this role, she provides technical guidance to the Standing Committee on Use and Egress aspects of the National Building Code. She also works with related Task Groups and Working Groups in the general area of accessibility.
Vicki previously worked as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus, and as a researcher at Simon Fraser University and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. In these roles, she led a number of projects on how the design and use of mobility aids and built environment features (like handrails) affected the risk for falls and injuries, especially in older adults. She also co-invented and commercialized two novel balance and walking aids with industry partner Hart Mobility.
Vicki has a B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering. Proudly born and raised in Calgary, AB, she is an Engineer-in-Training with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.
