SFPE Cross Canada Chapters Technical Session
Fire Protection Engineering Solutions to Upgrading Existing Buildings
Join us on September 25, 2024, for a free online technical session hosted by the SFPE Cross Canada Chapters. Alterations to existing buildings represent around half the volume of construction activity in Canada. Yet, the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) does not include a practical means for achieving acceptable fire and life safety in existing structures. The current mechanism in the NBCC is to use Alternative Solutions to demonstrate an equivalent or higher level of performance to the Acceptable Solutions in the Code. Existing buildings do not readily align with new construction which has led to an inconsistent, largely prescriptive approach across Canada. Many Fire Protection Engineers recognize that a holistic approach allows for more creativity in dealing with numerous existing conditions and can result in significant reductions in construction costs and permit processing times. The presentations will provide background, challenges, and possible solutions to the current disconnects in building regulations, in part contributing to the cost of affordable housing. The final presentation will include case studies and examples of projects on historic and heritage buildings in Old Montreal, illustrating complexities with existing conditions. Supporting Camp Bucko
SFPE NCR thanks its speakers for donating their time and effort to present to our chapter. We rely on their generosity to bring you great content. In lieu of speaker gifts, we make a donation to Camp Bucko to thank our speakers. Camp Bucko is a camp in Ontario that operates through donations to provide a free camp for kids aged 7-17 that are burn survivors.
From their website: Camp BUCKO provides an opportunity for children recovering from burn injuries to meet other children who share similar feelings and experiences in a camp environment. Camp gives these children temporary freedom from the everyday frustrations of being burned, a chance to share their stories and to bond with each other. Most of all though camp is a place to have fun and learn new things. It is a benefit for children in these circumstances to attend a program such as this to build self-esteem to cope with life beyond their burn injury.
